Membership

Membership in the Alberta Firefighters Pipe Band (AFPB) is open to civilians, professional and volunteer Firefighters and to any member of Alberta’s Emergency Services.

The Alberta Band is presently based in Calgary. A minimum 50% participation commitment for members living in or around Calgary for all practices and events is expected. For those members living outside Calgary (a driving distance of 1 hour or more), “part time” participation and membership will be considered on a case by case basis.

All band members (full or part time) will be asked for a “one time” $100 non refundable donation to the Alberta Firefighters Pipe Band. As well, all members will be asked to assist (to the best of their abilities) in fundraising activities. The band’s executive reserves the right to limit or revoke membership at any time.

New members who wish to play publically with the band must be able to play at a reasonable level of competence. They must also play a reasonable number of the bands tunes to be considered for membership. Initial membership in the band will be at the discretion of the Pipe Major.

The Alberta Firefighters Pipe Band operates as an independent and fully functioning pipe band. The only difference between this band and others is the concept of “shared” membership with fire department pipe bands from Calgary, Lethbridge, and Red Deer etc. The Pipe Major and the executive maintain the right to limit and/or restrict the number of members and new pipers within the band.

 Practices

Practices take place every Tuesday night between the hours of 7:00pm and 9:00pm. The practices presently take place at the CPS Westwinds Facility, Calgary, AB

Practices may be scheduled at other locations or at other times at the discretion of the Pipe Major.

 The Bands Executive

The AFPB executive will be made up of a Pipe Major, Band President, Treasurer, Quartermaster and a Director at Large.

Please note: The Alberta bands executive will be responsible for all decisions regarding the operation of the band. Votes* and polling of band members may be taken into consideration for some issues if the Executive agree it is in the best interest of the band to do so.

*All votes taken by the band must be recorded and follow Roberts Rules of Order.

It must be clearly understood by both the civilian and volunteer firefighters involved with the “Alberta Firefighters Pipe Band” that IAFF affiliated Firefighters will, on occasion, play and travel to events to represent their respective departments and IAFF associations.  This travel will be outside the scope of the AFPB and will not receive any funding or compensation from the Alberta Firefighters Pipe Band.
